Creative Online Fun For The Weekend

"There are some brilliantly clever people out there, designing and
programming innovative web-based activities and utilities. One of my
favourite recent discoveries is this web-based game in which you simply draw
a stick man using your mouse. Once the drawing is done, the fun starts. Your
stick man comes to life and you have to help him or her through an adventure.
In my test run I drew a stick man near a tree and then I was asked to draw a
ladder that my stick man could use to climb the tree and reach the tiger.
Now, I'm being asked to draw a tiger suit. For kids young and old, this is a
great bit of online fun for the weekend. Give it a try!"

Free Tool Analyzes Email Header To Show Route Taken

"If you need to investigate the origin of an email message, all the
information that you require in order to do is right there, in the message
itself, in a section called the header. Trouble is, most email programs don't
display the header information by default. And even if they did, it would be
difficult to understand because it's not really structured in a way that most
people can comprehend. However, this free online tool makes it all very easy.
" Just the thing for spotting possible phishing email or other fake email
supposedly from your friends.

Introducing The 5 MB (Yes Really) Hard Disk

If you have no sense of wonder at technological progress or find tech history
boring then you should skip this item. Everyone else will find themselves
reflecting in wonder just how far things have come since IBM introduced the
first hard drive in the 1950s. As big as a refrigerator and costing a small
fortune it was a marvel of its times. And the glimpse of 1950s California
where the drive was developed is almost as fascinating. - Gizmo

Wallpaper of the Week

I've had so much to tell you about over the last two weeks that I didn't have
space to mention Rhiannon's latest finds in her "Wallpaper of the Week"
series. I'll make up for that in this post by listing her last three
wallpaper picks: Spiral Shells on Brown Background Showcases six spiral snail
shells mounted on a soothing brown background. The shells and background
combine to create a striking but understated wallpaper. The shells are
arranged by height, adding balance to the image. Desktop icons display quite
nicely on this muted background. Sunset at Horseshoe Bend Overlooking the
Colorado River: This is an impressive shot of the Colorado River from the rim
of Horseshoe Bend as it winds its way through the Canyonlands area of the
U.S.A. The colors are fairly muted so icons stand out well against the
background. Diagonal Blues Features diagonal lines in various shades of blue
fading to brown at the bottom. The diagonal lines almost look like they were
made with a wide paintbrush. The wallpaper is on the dark side with good
texture. Low key and minimal, this wallpaper shows desktop icons clearly.

Three Tips for Running Programs as Administrator in Windows 7

"Beginning with Vista and continuing in Windows 7, new security measures were
introduced that required additional steps for running certain types of
programs or operations. For example, elevated administrator credentials are
required for anything that affects system settings. This higher security
setting is commonly referred to as "running as administrator or with
elevated privileges"" However quite often Windows 7 confuses users by
saying that these operations requires administrator privileges even when the
user is using an account seemingly with those privileges. In this article our
Tips Editor Vic explains the reason why and tells what you can do to overcome
the problem.

Microsoft OneNote. Free For Android, iPhone And Windows Phone

"OneNote has always been the black sheep of the Microsoft Office family. It's
far less well known than Word, Outlook, PowerPoint or Excel. And yet this
note-taking app, originally developed for the first generation of tablet PCs
a decade ago, is actually a good, solid, useful product that's recently been
updated and bundled with Office 2010. If you're on the road with a
smartphone, though, and you miss having easy access to the OneNote files on
your PC back at base, all is not lost. Microsoft has recently launched
versions of OneNote for Android, the iPad, and Windows Phone 7. They cost
around $15 each, but if you're prepared to live with a limit of 500 notes
then the apps are free."

Something New You Need to Know about: - Cliplets

According to researchers at Microsoft, images can no longer be classified
into the still and moving sort. There's also a third kind, which they've
termed a Cliplet. You can think of this as a still image that's taken from a
single frame of a movie, but with one small area of the screen that still
contains the full moving version. The potential is considerable. If you have
an interest in photography and videos you should check this out as it offers
a new creative option.

Introduction to Light Virtualization

This sounds like a daunting topic but it's actually quite simple to
understand. Full virtualization is what you get with products like VMWare
which create a complete virtual PC within your PC. Light virtualization is
where you virtualize only some aspects of your PC not the whole caboodle. The
advantage is you are only working in one environment yet get a similar
ability to revert changes such as malware infections and programs you are
testing out. The well known Sandboxie product is a good example of light
virtualization but there are numerous others equally useful. In this
excellent article, editor "Dedoimedo" reviews what free products are
available and lists pros and cons of each. Recommended. - Gizmo

Four Ways to Speedier and Better Google Searches

Our Tips Editor Vic says "There are a lot of pages on the Internet, billions
and billions of them. When you go to search for a topic, you often get
millions of hits listed. It is very easy for a worthwhile site to get buried
so far down in a search that you will never see it. So when you want to do a
search, it pays to do whatever you can to narrow down the hits that will be
displayed. That's where search operators come in. By adding certain terms
to a search, you can filter out a lot of irrelevant stuff and have a better
chance of finding what you are looking for. There are a number of Google
operators and previous tips (see the list at the end) have discussed some of
them. Here are four more that I use to help keep my searches manageable."

All The Information You'll Need To Effectively Prune Your Hard Drive

Our Tips Editor Robert Schifreen says: "I've recently been working on a
couple of Windows machines that were running short of hard disk space. I
could, of course, have simply added a new drive to the machine, or replaced
the existing one with a larger model. But if you find yourself in a similar
position, it's always a good idea to start by looking for stuff that you can
delete rather than just adding more storage." To help work out what you can
delete Robert recommends this free utility. "It's small, free, open source,
relatively quick to scan your drives, and presents the information in a neat
way. Then it's just a case of scanning down the list of folders in order of
percentage, and look for likely candidates that you know are safe to delete,
archive, or move elsewhere."
