Windows has a number of built-in power plans, and you can also create your
own customised plans too. A power plan is a way of saving electricity
consumption when you use your computer, and is relevant whether you use a
desktop or laptop. For example, you might have a plan that turns off the
screen after 10 minutes of inactivity, which is useful if you're in the habit
of walking away from your machine for long periods. The trouble with power
plans, though, or at least with the way that Windows implements them, is that
they are fiddly to configure and to switch. You could save a lot of energy if
you were willing to switch plans regularly so as to reflect what you were
using the computer for, but delving into the Control Panel each time means
that no one bothers to do so. To the rescue comes a handy utility called Easy
Power Plan Switcher. Once you've installed it, just click its icon on the
task bar and instantly switch between any of your defined power plans.
