Introducing The 5 MB (Yes Really) Hard Disk

If you have no sense of wonder at technological progress or find tech history
boring then you should skip this item. Everyone else will find themselves
reflecting in wonder just how far things have come since IBM introduced the
first hard drive in the 1950s. As big as a refrigerator and costing a small
fortune it was a marvel of its times. And the glimpse of 1950s California
where the drive was developed is almost as fascinating. - Gizmo

Wallpaper of the Week

I've had so much to tell you about over the last two weeks that I didn't have
space to mention Rhiannon's latest finds in her "Wallpaper of the Week"
series. I'll make up for that in this post by listing her last three
wallpaper picks: Spiral Shells on Brown Background Showcases six spiral snail
shells mounted on a soothing brown background. The shells and background
combine to create a striking but understated wallpaper. The shells are
arranged by height, adding balance to the image. Desktop icons display quite
nicely on this muted background. Sunset at Horseshoe Bend Overlooking the
Colorado River: This is an impressive shot of the Colorado River from the rim
of Horseshoe Bend as it winds its way through the Canyonlands area of the
U.S.A. The colors are fairly muted so icons stand out well against the
background. Diagonal Blues Features diagonal lines in various shades of blue
fading to brown at the bottom. The diagonal lines almost look like they were
made with a wide paintbrush. The wallpaper is on the dark side with good
texture. Low key and minimal, this wallpaper shows desktop icons clearly.

Three Tips for Running Programs as Administrator in Windows 7

"Beginning with Vista and continuing in Windows 7, new security measures were
introduced that required additional steps for running certain types of
programs or operations. For example, elevated administrator credentials are
required for anything that affects system settings. This higher security
setting is commonly referred to as "running as administrator or with
elevated privileges"" However quite often Windows 7 confuses users by
saying that these operations requires administrator privileges even when the
user is using an account seemingly with those privileges. In this article our
Tips Editor Vic explains the reason why and tells what you can do to overcome
the problem.

Microsoft OneNote. Free For Android, iPhone And Windows Phone

"OneNote has always been the black sheep of the Microsoft Office family. It's
far less well known than Word, Outlook, PowerPoint or Excel. And yet this
note-taking app, originally developed for the first generation of tablet PCs
a decade ago, is actually a good, solid, useful product that's recently been
updated and bundled with Office 2010. If you're on the road with a
smartphone, though, and you miss having easy access to the OneNote files on
your PC back at base, all is not lost. Microsoft has recently launched
versions of OneNote for Android, the iPad, and Windows Phone 7. They cost
around $15 each, but if you're prepared to live with a limit of 500 notes
then the apps are free."

Firefox Extension of the Week

Firefox has thousands of extensions, so many that it is almost impossible to
know what's good and what's not. To address this situation we've started a
new weekly series of articles where we sift through Mozilla and locate the
good stuff for you. We've kicked the series off with a terrific extension. As
the series editor George.J says "Do you experience discomfort, when you read
a webpage cluttered with ads all around the page? Or do you wish to remove
all the background elements of the page, except for the content that you're
reading? Well, you have a savior here!"
